NEW COVENANT CENTER

"The Soup Kitchen", Stamford, CT

St. Catherine of Siena was one of the founding parishes for New Covenant House, now named New Covenant Center (NCC), through the leadership of Father Vincent O’Connor the pastor at St. Catherine's during the late 1970's and '80's. He recognized the need for a local food program to serve Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, and Greenwich and along with the diocese of Bridgeport and Catholic Charities he organized New Covenant House.  It was created as an ecumenical center of hospitality to witness Christ's love and concern for the hungry and lonely in this area. The need for food and the number of "guests" have never decreased since the beginning of New Covenant House.

Our parish has three teams serving at the kitchen on Sundays. These teams alternate with other groups providing nourishing meals for every Sunday during the year. The team captains are always open to welcoming new volunteers.

The volunteers for serving at the kitchen must be over 16.  Most of the volunteers serve 5-7 times during the year.  The meals are planned by the captains and the volunteers contribute time and food as requested. The meals are served cafeteria style and consist of a main course, bread, salad and dessert.  The time for the service is from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

The "guests" at this soup kitchen are mostly men and the meal on Sunday is the only meal that many of them will have that day. The clients are respected as "guests" and New Covenant Center is their home for that meal.
